In Africa, anything that is not outside what is considered and accepted as the norm or appears alien is seen as spiritual and in most cases, evil.
Just recently, photos of a strange looking fish caught by some fishermen emerged online. While most people pondered over the type of sea creature it was, others believed it to be a mystical being.
The fish, although rare to these parts of the world is a Saw fish also known as carpenter sharks. They are characterized by a long, narrow, flattened rostrum, or nose extension, lined with sharp transverse teeth, arranged in a way that resembles a saw.
See photos below:
The large-tooth saw fish belong to a family of rays. The most prominent feature is its rostrum, also referred to as snout or saw, which has 14 to 23 large rostral teeth protruding from it, and comprises almost a quarter of the total length of the saw fish. Its body color can range from gray to greenish to golden brown, while its underbelly is cream-colored.
A sawfish’s gestation period is believed to be about five months, and that females reprocuce every other year. There may be four to ten sawfish in a litter. The number of rostral teeth is fixed during development. The rostral teeth are formed, somewhat flexible, and covered by a thin membrane, but harden upon birth.
