I didn’t use phones, they distract me - Enugu girl who made 9As

- Cynthia Ali, the 18-year-old girl from Enugu who made 9A’s in her WAEC has spoken on the sacrifices she made

- The young girl revealed she did not use a phone as she found it distracting

Cynthia Ali is a beautiful young girl from Enugu who has made waves in the past couple of weeks. The young girl had nine A’s in the recently released WAEC result.

The incredible feat recorded by this young girl inspired many people all over the country and this landed her an interview with Punch. There and then, she revealed the major sacrifices she had to make to get to the point where she is now.

Ali who hails from Umagama area of Enugu state is the third born of eight. She comes from a modest family where her father works as a teacher and as a poultry farmer while her mother is a lab scientist. She graduated from Shalom Academy in Nsukka.

Ali had her plans mapped out while she was in school. The success recorded by her elder brother also inspired her as she worked towards doing well and getting better. He had six A’s when he took the same exam she did and she was ready to floor him.

According to her, he helped her a great deal as she learnt many things from him before she took the exam. Ali revealed that her journey into senior secondary school was swift as she had motivators around. Her chemistry teacher briefed her about the stance of the school as they were yet to have a history breaker. No one ever made nine A’s in the school.

She had a special note which she named ‘My future WASSCE results’. In this note, she wrote the grade she wanted on all nine subjects. She ticked them all A’s. Although her friends thought she was being overzealous, the young girl worked towards it and asked God for His help.

Ali also revealed that she never had a boyfriend while she was in school. She read most times and did the basic chores in the house the few hours she did not have her nose stuck in books. Her routine was fixed; she did not have time to entertain frivolous talks or activities.

The success recorded by Ali landed her the opportunity of meeting the governor who eventually gave her a scholarship to study in any university of her choice in Nigeria. She also got a cash prize of one million naira.

Her father’s decision not to make her use a mobile phone paid off as the young girl accepted she would have been distracted with the numerous apps on the device. Not only was she prevented from owning one, she was also prevented from using it as it was considered a serious offence in their house.

Ali’s dream is to be a medical doctor. She does not consider herself to be a genius as she believes anyone could achieve this feat if they set their hearts to it. The young girl is not considering studying outside the country at this stage as she is naïve and weary of living all by herself.
