Indian women allow "God-men" to walk over them in desperate bid to get pregnant

Some women in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, have been allowing "God-men" to literally walk over them in a desperate bid to fall pregnant.

The bizarre ritual is said to be a part of the age-old traditional festival of Ekadashi, which takes place annually in the month of July at the temple of Lakshmi Narasimha Swami.

The women, said to be unable to bear children, were pictured lying face down on the ground and waiting for the "God-man" to step on their backs.

There is widespread belief in the area that the unusual practice has worked for generations and that many women have gone on to have children after going through it.

Harilal Nayak, a magistrate of a local town in the state, said although there is no evidence that the ritual works, women still participate in it.

He said: "People hold a strong belief in this practice and numerous women take part thinking it works."
