- Chinese firm has come under attack after fish and wildlife died in reserve

- The animals died as a result of pollution that left stream in the reserve literally red

- Locals believe the company in question released toxic chemicals into the stream

- Samples of the water have since been taken and here is the report

A Chinese company has come under fire after thousands of fish and wildlife were found dead in a popular Gambian wildlife reserve.

Golden Lead Factory is being blamed for releasing lethal chemicals into the stream, thus poisoning the water and consequently killing both the aquatic life in it and wildlife that depend on the stream for drinking water.

“Some samples have been taken for research and investigation purposes. Area residents seem convinced that the animals and the fish died as a result of chemicals from the factory in question,” noted Green Wall Warriors, a Dutch wildlife conservation organisation.

It has also emerged that the very Chinese firm had earlier been accused of dumping into the stream dangerous chemicals through pipes, leading to death of numerous fish.

However, in the initial case, the company was reportedly absolved after investigations revealed that some group of local fishermen used unauthorized fishing gear to catch immature fish and dumped the fish in the coastline. A number of them were apprehended.

Meanwhile, a petition has been lodged and campaign is ongoing against the Chinese firm as locals insist the company is to blame for the death of fish and wildlife.

The locals also claim that their lives are endangered by the chemicals that are coming from the Golden Lead Factory. They want the president to act.

President Adama Barrow is yet to comment or act on the matter.
