20kg tumour is removed from man’s abdomen after local witch doctor fails to cure him

A 49-year-old Indian man can finally live a normal life after doctors removed a massive tumour from his abdomen.
Shyamal Tirke’s 20kg tumour was so huge the villagers were convinced he was possessed with ghosts. His family took him to a local witch doctor to cure him.
Unfortunately, the witch’s medication did not help. Left with no option, the family stopped talking to him and locked him up in a room.

Concerned neighbours then chipped in to try and convince Tirke’s family to take him to the hospital to see the real doctors. The family agreed.
Tirke was taken for a free checkup at Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

X-ray revealed a massive malignant mass growing in Tirke’s abdomen. The medics identified it as Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma tumour, a rare form of cancer that develops in the fatty tissues in the abdomen near the kidneys, pancreas and bladder.
A team of three doctors reportedly managed to get rid of the massive tumor in a two-and-a-half hour operation.
“It is a very rare tumour. In fact, it's the first time the doctors have removed such a large tumour in SSKM. It took us two and a half hour to remove it. The patient is improving and will soon be back to his normal life,” says Dr Partha Sarathi Ghosh, who led the operation.
