Woman opens Aids shelter for 98 children and 27 HIV-positive mothers (photos)

- Gail Johnson, the adoptive mother of the late AIDS/HIV poster boy, Nkosi Johnson, has set up a shelter for HIV positive mothers and orphans called ‘Nkosi’s Haven’

- She has been nominated as one the 10 finalists to receive the L'Oreal Paris Women of Worth awards for her actions

- If she wins L'Oreal Paris will give her grant money so that she can continue her fight

L'Oreal has elected Gail Johnson, the founder of Nkosi’s haven, as one of the finalists for the inaugural L'Oreal Paris Women of Worth awards.

"Although our younger children never met Nkosi they learn about him at school."

Gail Johnson, the adoptive mother of child HIV/AIDS activist Nkosi Johnson, who passed away in 2001 at the age of 12, continues to help HIV-infected women and orphans by sheltering them and offering aid at Nkosi’s Haven.

Currently Nkosi’s Haven is home to 98 children and 27 HIV+ mothers.

The shelter was named after her adopted son Nkosi Johnson, who became a symbol of the fight against HIV/AIDS when he was declined enrollment into a school because of his HIV status.

L'Oreal’s program is aimed to help women that can make a difference. They offer them grant money in the sum of N1.2m so they can continue their work.

Gail stated: "I am honored that I was nominated. It is a great feeling when someone out there recognizes the work you do. We don't receive government funding, so it's tough."

She adds: "Although our younger children never met Nkosi they learn about him at school."
