A mother has given birth to a baby girl with a head more than twice the normal size.

The baby, identified as Jaya Dalvi, was born with a rare condition called hydrocephalus, which doctors say is a build -up of fluid inside the skull.

It is the build-up fluid that leads to constant swelling of the head.

The condition has cause baby Dalvi's head to grow more than double in size.

According to the experts, the average head size for a newborn baby should be about 38 centimetres in circumference. But Dalvi's head has grown up to 71 centimetres big.

"Children born with this condition normally require urgent surgery to rescue them from being permanently disabled," says one of the doctors looking into the baby's case.

However, the kid's family is extremely poor and therefore cannot afford her treatment. Her 30 year old father, Bhavesh Dalvi, is a farmer who earns paltry 2 pounds a day. The mother, Jaywanti Dalvi, is a house wife.

The family is unable to take their baby to a private hospital where they reportedly have facilities that are needed to take care of the child. They have been forced to take the baby to a state run hospital instead, where they don't have the necessary facilities.

"If not treated in good time, the disease could progress very rapidly and kill the baby. The child can die because the brain tissues are unable to adapt to the pressure," says Dr Manoj Patel.

The doctor explains that treatment for Delvi's condition will involve implanting shunt into her brain to drain the excess fluid to other parts of the body, where the fluid can then be reabsorbed.

"The procedure is normally performed by paediatric neurosurgeons, and the operation usually takes about 30 minutes, its not that complicated," says Dr Patel.

Unfortunately, the hospital where the baby was taken does not have the facilities needed to perform that kind of surgery.

It is not yet clear what caused Delvi's condition, and it is almost impossible to know what other complications the child might be having without properly investigating. The poor parents are now pleading for help to save their daughter.
