South Africans now read scripture, preach and support each other in the bus (photos)

In the South African coastal city of Port Elizabeth, it is not uncommon to board a bus and mistake it for a church. This is because one is likely to encounter people preaching, singing, and taking turns to share their spiritual testimonies in public transport buses.

According to one of the commuters who regularly participates in these spiritual sessions, women form the main participants in such sessions.

53-year-old Nobuntu Mwarwanqana says they read scriptures, sing hymns, and offer commuters spiritual support as part of fulfilling the Biblical dictum of spreading the word of God beyond the church.

Nobuntu, says not every commuter is keen on the sessions, as some prefer to keep to the themselves. She says participants often give the unwilling space and hopes they will soon join in the spiritual journey.

She adds that their fellowship goes further to include material and financial support for those in distress.
