A teacher in the Northern Cape province of South Africa has warmed the hearts of many South Africans when pictures of him giving a piggyback ride to a disabled girl surfaced on the internet.
Riaan van Straten is head of sports at a private school in the province. He noticed that young Angela Motswamere wanted to participate in a 60-meter race with her classmates but couldn't because she does not have lower legs.
He immediately picked her up and carried her through the race on his back. He said afterwards that Angela was so happy that she giggled throughout the race.
Riaan added that he was happy to have enabled Angela to participate in the race and not feel left out.
He said he has always had a compassionate concern for others from a young age, and this was strengthened by his personal experience of his child having to go through several heart surgeries due to a heart condition.
The school has received a flood of goodwill and inspired messages from members of the public who have seen the pictures.
